discontinuities in materials.
Discontinuities can affect the service ability of the material or
structure, so NDT is important in assuring safe operation as well
as in quality control and assessment of remaining plant life.
The discontinuities may be any form of material degradation caused
by service conditions or the original manufacturing process, which
can lead to loss of strength or catastrophic failure in service.
NDT is used for in-service inspection and for condition monitoring
of operating plant, as well as for a quality control tool in the
manufacturing environment.
